that affects women in their reproductive age. The disease is characterized by
the fact that cysts are formed inside of the ovaries (female reproductive
organ). This disease has increased its grasp over Indian society in recent
times. 1 in 5 women or 20% of Indian women is predicted to be suffering from
the PCOS problem. People in our society are very less informed about the disease
and so the treatment is not availed by many. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
is most evident in teenage girls.

Causes of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Polycystic
Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is caused due to the imbalances of the
sexual hormones in your brain and ovaries.
Ovaries are
part of the female reproductive system. The ovaries contain the lifetime supply
of eggs. These eggs are immature and are stored in a tiny fluid-filled
structure called the follicle. The pituitary gland located in our brain
secretes a hormone called Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle Stimulating
Hormone (FSH) into the bloodstream to direct the function of the ovaries. After
these hormones reach the ovaries, hundreds of eggs start to mature which leads
to the expansion of the size of the follicle. On being fully mature, the egg
secretes the female sex hormone called Estrogen. After the level of Estrogen
reaches a certain level in the bloodstream, the pituitary gland sends the
Luteinizing Hormone (LH) to the ovaries which cause the most mature follicle to
open which in turn releases the egg. This process is called ovulation. The egg
then travels through the other reproductive organ called the fallopian tube and
waits for fertilization. The remaining eggs and follicles then dissolve with
time. If the egg is not fertilized then they are shed in the next menstrual
period.
The pituitary
gland of the patients with Polycystic
Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) secretes
unusually high amounts of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) into the bloodstream which
disrupts the regular menstrual cycle. As a result of which, the follicle
remains immature and this disrupts the process of ovulation. Some of the
immature follicle which should have dissolved with time do not dissolve and remain
as fluid-filled sacs also called as cysts.
The other cause
of PCOS is the increase in the level of insulin, the hormone produced by the
pancreas. The excess amount of insulin when combines with the Luteinizing
Hormone (LH) prevents ovulation as the combination of both the hormones produces
the male hormone called testosterone. The increase in the testosterone also
leads to other problems like acne and abnormal hair growth in the face, chest,
back, or toes. But not always the high growth of hair or acne suggests that
someone has PCOS. So, the diagnosis of the disease is very important.
Diagnosis for PCOS
Department
of endocrinology and metabolism, AIIMS conducted a study regarding PCOS. The
detailed study reveals
that about 20-25% of the Indian women suffering from PCOS are of reproductive
age. The study was conducted on about sample size of 3500. The shocking outcome
was that 50% of the women were unaware of the fact that they are suffering from
the disease.
The
test of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) generally consists of
thorough questioning. The doctor needs to know about the menstrual cycle and
regular health followed by a full body check-up. The doctor may want to see get
the blood tests to make sure the blood sugar level and hormone level are not on
the higher side. Some doctors may ask for an ultrasound too. After a lot of
grilling and body examinations, if the patients test positive of the disease,
she surely would want the treatment of the PCOS.
Treatment of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
People rely on traditional
methods for the treatment of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
But the doctors instead of supplying medicines for the entire disease, supply
medication like birth control pills and diabetes for the individual symptoms. These
do not solve the core issue.
PCOS also leads to
infertility. Worried about not having a child makes the patient & her
family anxious and they opt treatment from the local quacks and some even
surrender to prayers and pooja. But in the absence of proper treatment, the
condition of the patients worsens which may in the future lead to infertility.
